Description of activity
I work as a Professor in the School of Management at the University of Vaasa. In addition, I hold the title of Adjunct Professor in Knowledge and Innovation Management at the Universities of Tampere and Vaasa. I have worked in various teaching, research, and development roles since the late 1990s. During the 1980s and 1990s, I worked in a small advertising agency where my responsibilities ranged widely from one task to another. I hold a Doctor of Philosophy degree from Tampere University of Technology and a Master of Social Sciences degree from the University of Turku. I believe that my social science background, combined with the years I spent in Hervanta, Tampere, among engineers and business scholars, has both broadened my worldview and provided me with conceptual tools for understanding a wide range of phenomena. Over the years, my work as a researcher has given me the opportunity to engage with interesting people and diverse organizational environments. I have met numerous inspiring colleagues whose encouragement has led me to venture into many previously unfamiliar topics. Alongside occasional successes, there have also been many failures. My research has focused, among other things, on the governance of complex systems, the dynamics of systemic change, the epistemic infrastructure of democracy, factors that promote or hinder innovation, the opportunities and challenges of knowledge-based management, service-based value creation, and public sector reforms. At present, I am particularly interested in the causes, manifestations, and consequences of organizational ignorance. Independently and in collaboration with others, I have published approximately 300 scientific articles, books or book chapters, conference papers, and popular science articles. My work has appeared in journals such as Public Administration Review, Public Management Review, Public Performance & Management Review, International Journal of Public Sector Management, International Public Management Journal, Public Money & Management, Administration & Society, Nature Sustainability, Hallinnon Tutkimus, Yhteiskuntapolitiikka, Politiikka, Media & Viestintä, Sosiaalilääketieteellinen aikakauslehti, Informaatiotutkimus, and Focus Localis. My books have been published by publishers including Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, Edward Elgar, Springer, Vastapaino, Gaudeamus, and Into Kustannus. My popular science writings have appeared in outlets such as Helsingin Sanomat, Talouselämä, Kauppalehti Optio, Turun Sanomat, and Kanava. In addition to writing, I have served as an expert reviewer for numerous academic journals, conferences, and research funding organizations.
